Ayatollah calls protests ironic

On 25 February 2009, Aftab News reported that Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi, one of the most powerful religious leaders in Iran today, had said:

"Why is that when a few Baha'i spies are arrested in Iran, the American Congress stands up to defend them but when it comes to these painful episodes [of Sunni-Shi'i violence that erupted in Medina on February 23], they are completely silent?

"According to reliable information, a group of Wahhabis published 30 million books against Shi'ism last year; yet they don't allow a single book to be published to offer a rational response to their flimsy arguments."

STUDENTS expelled for their Faith

Since 1979 Bahá'í students in Iran have been barred from attending University solely on account of their religion. One student wrote:

"...the question is raised: Who is responsible for this injustice and lawlessness? Where in the Constitution do we find support for the authorities’ actions?

"As an Iranian citizen, I love my sacred homeland to the point that I am willing to sacrifice my life for the exaltation of this noble nation. My highest and most cherished wish is to use my education in service to this country. I am determined to use every moment of my life in the path of service to mankind, especially to my beloved Iran and Iranians."
